NEW TO YOGA?
Yoga is one of the most ancient, sacred traditions known to mankind and every decade or so we seem to "re-discover" it. Today yoga is enjoying yet another renaissance as Western doctors encourage the practice for stress reduction and celebrities glamorize it with their supple bodies. It doesn't matter why you practice yoga or what you hope to achieve-- yoga is both the means and the goal!
Over the past few years, several different branches of yoga have emerged. There are very slow, focused practices and there are rapid, flowing classes. There are gentle, restorative classes and there are classes that are as rigorous as any aerobics class.
There is Hatha, Viniyoga, Kundalini, JivaMukti, Iyengar and Anusara yoga, to name only a few. Then there are yoga hybrid classes like Power Yoga and Yogilates. (Yeah, I think it sounds like that, too. I'll have a half-decaf. yogilate with milk, please)
If you've never done yoga before then Hatha is a great place to start as it will give you the core program. Contact the Yoga Alliance or do a websearch for your area (yoga + your town). It doesn't matter where you live, you'll be able to find a good instructor in your town. I've taken yoga classes all over the country over the past ten years and I've never had a bad class. Yoga instructors love what they do and have a sincere desire to serve others.
Don't be afraid to try yoga-- no matter what kind of shape you're in. You will be treated with kindness and respect.
